A Facilities Enhancement Proposal From the Elders

Dear Elim Members,

I am writing this on behalf of the Elder Board. In the past we confess that we may have moved a bit too slow when it came to making needed repairs to our property and building. For instance, we knew for a long time that our roof needed repair, but it wasn't until after one rainy Sunday, during a Baptism service, that those being baptized weren't the only ones who got wet!

We recognize that we are called to be stewards of the property and building which God has given us to meet in, on the corner of 94th and 128th, and as everyone is no doubt keenly aware, presently there are a few things that are in disrepair.

The most urgent need is to replace our aging carpet, which is irreparably stained. We are also planning for a remodeling of our stage and a corresponding upgrade to our sound system wiring, which involves cutting a groove in the concrete (and therefore needs to be done as we are replacing the carpeting).

Our other priority is to remove the back (north) wall in the worship center (between the sound booth and hall door) and replace it with a sound-proof folding wall that could be opened to enable us to turn the room behind it into seating overflow. In addition, we will make some corresponding speaker installations in that room to connect it to the main worship center room.

Finally, there are several other smaller items which we would like to accomplish this summer depending on the cost of the whole package. For instance, we are planning to:

  • Replace the overhead stage lights with brighter, energy-efficient LED bulbs.

  • Clean up the sound dampening panels so they are more attractive.

  • Replace the high window blinds with window tinting.

Also, eventually we would like to tackle a kitchen remodel, though we don't have funds for that in the current plan. Hopefully next year! (If anyone feels called to make a special donation for this, we're looking at a price tag of around $20,000 for this.)

At our last Elders' meeting a motion was made to propose to the congregation the securing of a $50,000 line of credit from the Christian Investors Group to finance these upgrades. This is available at an outstanding interest rate of 6.25%, and it's been recommended by our outgoing Treasurer, Steve Semke, that such an unsecured line of credit (during these uncertain financial times) would be a more advisable way of funding these upgrades than spending out of the approximately $60,000 in cash that we currently have on hand.

We are therefore asking the voting members of Elim to attend a special business meeting on Sunday, July 12, following the worship service, called for the purpose of discussing this motion and voting on it. In the meantime, we ask you to be praying about this matter with us. If you have input or questions please chat with us before the meeting. You can e-mail our Elder board chair, Larry Short, any time at larryshort@gmail.com.

As I have discussed this opportunity to replace the carpet with other Elim members, their response has been, “It's about time!” The stage remodel and wiring will take advantage of the carpet replacement procedure to reduce future cost. And the soundproof, moveable rear wall will enable us to accommodate more visitors and attenders, as well as vastly improve the situation for classes and Awana.

The fact that God has blessed Elim with a growth in our attendance and rock-steady finances this year tells us that we should be cautious yet mindful of steps like these which need to be taken to better accommodate new folks.

We look forward to dialoguing about this with you. Please feel free to contact any of the elders or pastors.

Serving the Lord and You!
