THE LAST WORD:

The Clash Of Cultures

The times are changing! Often it feels like our political and cultural leaders are pursuing a path that disregards biblical values and ideals Christians have held dear for centuries. This has created a war of cultures: The culture and ideals of Jesus vs. the culture and ideals of this world. Because these issues are confusing and complex, Christians often retreat into silence or shout out in ignorance. Neither strategy is very effective.

Jesus tells His followers, “You are the salt of the earth.” Salt was used as a preservative. It was pressed into meat to retard decay. Jesus is clear: We are to be pressed like salt into the structures and discussions of society and the public square. Retreat and ignorance are not options. As followers, we must be prepared and equipped to engage in this war of ideas with grace and truth.

Starting Sunday, September 20, I will begin the series, CULTURE CLASH: Straight Answers To Hard Questions. My goal is to provide clarity regarding how our faith should shape our understanding and response to the complex ideas and issues that are a part of this war.

September 20 HYPOCRISY: “Why Church So Full of Hypocrites?”

September 27 ABORTION: “Why Shouldn’t We Let a Woman Choose?”

October 11 HOMOSEXUALITY: “Why Can’t We Live and Let Live?”

October 18 EUTHANASIA: “Why Shouldn’t I Be in Control of When My Life Ends?”

October 25 MARRIAGE: “Why Shouldn’t any Two Consenting Adults Have the Same Right?”

November 8 WOMEN: “Why Is The Church Dominated by People Who Oppress Women?”

These are tough issues! We need to be prepared to give an answer and engage in the discussion in the classroom, work place or in state capitol.

I realize there are many more topics I could deal with. If you have a topic that you believe would make an important contribution to this series, let me know. I have left a few Sundays open to make some adjustments.

God Bless,

Martin
